Generic Structure of News Item
Generic structure of news item text are :
- Newsworthy event : It recounts the event in a brief form or summary form.
- Background event : They elaborate what happened, to whom, or in what circumstances.
- Source : It contains about comments by participants in, witnesses to, and authorities expert on the event.
Language features of News Item Text
- Use past tenses (the simple past, the past continuous, the past perfect).
- Use action verbs (go, walk, run, eat, drive, ride, etc.)
- Use saying verbs (tell, say, shout, answer, complain, etc.)
- Use adverbs of manner (happily, joyfully, slowly, fast, etc.)
- Use adverbs of time and place (one day, after the lesson, in the classroom, through the green grass, etc.)
- Use adjective to form noun phrase (a beautiful, sunny day; a large, green field; a white, shady beach)
- Use conjunction to link sentences (and, but, so, because, for, or)
- Use time connectives (after that, meanwhile, the next morning, then, finally, next, at the end)
- Use pronoun (he, she, they, them, his, her, him, them, we, our, my)
- Use passive voice (Seven people were killed in collision... , The museum was built in...)
