Definition of Caption Text

A caption is a short description or title that identifies or describes a document, graphic, photo, or table. Other meanings, caption is a short description that accompanies the illustration.

The Social Function of Caption Text

Caption has a social function, namely to provide basic information about an object.

Caption Writing Structure

Captions are not written arbitrarily. There is a structure for writing captions so that what is in the picture is conveyed properly, namely:

•   Opening

 The opening is usually in an image written in a larger size to attract the attention of the reader.

•   Content

 Content contains concise information to explain the image.

• Closing

The closing part is usually in the form of additional information that has not been conveyed in the content.

The Language Element of The Caption Text

To be informative, captions should be written in simple present tense and sentences that are simple and easy to understand.

1. Exclamation
2. Question
3. Adjective Phrase
4. Personal Phrase

The Characteristics of Caption Text

• The language used is short and clear.
• Can use any tense.
• Contains motivation, invitations, and pearls of wisdom.
• Often used on images that are not clear.

Kinds of Caption Text

• Education,
• Environment,
• Flood,
• Natural,
• School,
• etc.

Generic Structure of Caption

• The title
• The lead
• Section Heading
